Poodles - Exercise Needs

Poodles are very smart and highly trainable dogs. They do not require much exercise, but should be given an opportunity to run and play off the leash in a safe area where their owner can supervise them. The Standard Poodle needs more activity than its smaller varieties. Poodles can happily live in an apartment. They get along with other pets in the family quite well.

One of the most intelligent breeds, Poodles need mental exercise as well. They are quick at learning a variety of tricks.

Poodles - Grooming Requirements

The Poodle's coat needs considerable efforts on the owner's part to maintain it in a good condition. Poodles should be bathed regularly and the ears checked for mites. If necessary, any excess hair should be pulled out from the ears. Poodles are suitable for allergy sufferers, as they shed little to no hair. Frequent trimming and brushing are necessary.

Show dogs have to be clipped according to the breed style. A professional groomer will do it best. Pet quality Poodles are often trimmed. Longer hair is left on the head, the ears and the legs. The teeth need checked for tartar.

Poodles - Breed Origin

The breed is said to have originated in Germany. Poodles were developed as water retrievers and flushers of birds. They were used as sporting dogs in the 13th century. During the 19th century, the Poodle became immensely popular in France. The Germans gave the breed the name Pudel, which translates as "to splash in water". Poodles are popular family companions in many countries nowadays.
